Seeking continuance and implementation of GO 111

HYDERABAD: Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, the two lakes that have quenched the city's thirst for decades, are set to lose their status as drinking water reservoirs for Hyderabad. The move to de-notify the two lakes as the city's drinking water sources, it is reliably learnt, is to facilitate scrapping provisions of government order (GO) 111 that prevents commercial activity or largescale constructions in 10-km radius of the two lakes. HMDA Plots in Kothur

Information trickling out of the government, indicates the two lakes need to make way for real-estate development and provide for recreation in the wake of intense pressure from public representatives and realtors. Over the past decade, price of land around the lakes has skyrocketed with villas being developed within 10km radius being sold for anywhere between Rs 1 crore and Rs 3.5 crore. A committee set up as part of another GO 839, is studying implications of scrapping the government order (GO), particularly with a case pen ding before National Green Tribunal, seeking continuance and implementation of GO 111. It is expected the committee will soon recommend changing the status of the two lakes from drinking water sources to recreation, commercial and recreational fishing.

Real Estate deals in GO 111 Areas

Speculation that the GO could be lifted or eased by the government may have led to massive real estate transactions in the last few months in Gandipet, Chevella and other areas. GO 111 villages fall in Moinabad, Shamshabad, Chevella and  a few parts of Rajendranagar mandal as well.

Gandipet, Shankarpally, Maheswaram, Shamshabad, Qutbullapur, Ibrahimpatnam and Shadnagar registered the highest realty growth in the state with an increase of 70% to 120% revenue in 2018-19 when compared to the last financial year. Plots near shamshabad

Chevella witnessed 78% growth in gross revenue of the registration department. Similarly, Shamshabad recorded 72% growth. GO 111 protects the catchment areas of twin reservoirs of Osmansagar and Himayatsagar and restrictions are imposed on construction and industrial activity in the area. The ruling TRS had promised during the elections that it would scrap the GO which would pave for increased real estate activity.

Thakur Raj Kumar Singh of Human Rights and Consumer Protection Cell said that National Green Tribunal would take a decision after receiving a report from the high-power committee on the GO. "We are waiting for the report which will be filed with the help of NGRI. Scrapping or relaxation of GO 111 will have an impact on the protection of twin reservoirs," he said. Another petition is already pending in the high court since 2007. There are around 86 villages notified in the GO 111 area. " We have .
